Clinical Disclaimer
hayleywilds.com and its publications are not a substitute for therapy.
All articles, blog posts, books, podcasts, product recommendations, and other media are intended for educational purposes only, and should not be considered clinical directives or medical advice.
Although authors are experts in their field, and all content is of the highest quality, based on current clinical research, readers should always rely on the support and clinical & medical guidance of a trained mental health professional.
Art Therapy Disclaimer:
Using creative and expressive arts for growth and healing can have meaningful impact on your life. And if you are a mental health professional, introducing art into your work with clients can be powerful.
Using Art as Therapy for Your Own Healing
There are so many benefits to art therapy, it’s easy to see why the field is growing. While it is possible to use art and creative expression on your own toward healing, it’s crucial that you identify when you might need the support of a trained art therapist to guide you.
Additionally, some art therapy directives can be self-guided, but they work best under the guidance of a trained art therapist.
Using Art as Non-Art Therapist
If you are a mental health pro but not a trained art therapist, it’s important to ensure you have training on art therapy and how to use art effectively. Additionally, it’s vital that you do not call yourself an art therapist or advertise yourself as such.
Though there are ways to incorporate art into your practice, the general practice of art therapy by untrained or non-credentialed art therapists is not recommended. According to the American Art Therapy Association, “art therapy can only be practiced by an individual who possesses the required training, certification, and/or state licensure. Bona fide art therapy is beyond the scope of practice of non-art therapists.”
Clients & Client Artwork Referenced in Our Posts & Publications
Every vignette, case study, or reference to a client has been adapted and adjusted for legal and ethical publication. Names, demographics, and other identifying information have all been changed in order to protect client identity, confidentiality, and privacy. The information presented in each example is for educational purposes only, intended to illustrate a concept, technique, or activity.
The majority of the art therapy artwork examples used on the site or in our publications were created by staff, unless otherwise stated. The images serve as a reference for the reader. Some of the featured artwork is “response art”. That means artwork created upon reflection on work with a specific client. All efforts are made to comply with HIPAA law and confidentiality and privacy of all clients.
