Finding Pregnancy Loss Resources
Research shows that 1 in 4 pregnancies end in miscarriage. And sadly, that means that a significant number of people endure the grief of pregnancy loss. You might reasonably assume that those numbers mean there’s a plethora of readily available pregnancy loss resources and supports. Unfortunately, that’s not really the case.
A Lack of Resources
When I experienced my first miscarriage, I was completely caught off guard. I felt wholly unprepared. What’s more, I felt pretty alone in my struggle.
The medical team responsible for my D & C procedure took great care of me while I was in the hospital. And they sent me home with a care package of pads, ibuprofen, and a tip sheet of do’s and don’ts following the procedure.
But sadly, not one “tip” on that sheet spoke to the mental, psychological, and emotional grief experience I was about to have.
No resources for where to find more information about pregnancy loss. No organizations to contact. No suggestions for how to honor my baby. No referrals to mental health providers who specialize in pregnancy loss grief.
Just tips related to bleeding, physical pain management, and how much activity I could tolerate. I didn’t realize it then but now I totally understand the full impact of this lack of resources.
Breaking the Silence Around Pregnancy Loss
Since that first loss, I have learned more than I care to know about Western Culture’s response to pregnancy loss. Much of what I’ve observed deals with insensitivity, silence, and stigma.
But there are communities that know the pain and struggle of pregnancy loss.
They understand the importance of validation, social connection, and grief expression. These communities work hard to break the silence and stop the stigma. They are tirelessly devoted to impacting the volume, quality, and availability of pregnancy loss resources across the country. Breaking the silence through books, podcasts, non-profits, companies, support groups, products, social media and more.
